Resumen: El presente artículo, partiendo de los inicios de la poesía castellana en el virreinato de Perú y en la Nueva España, hace un recorrido por la poesía épica y lírica de los siglos XVI y XVII. Tal recorrido recala en las diferencias entre la poesía del Perú virreinal y la de la Nueva España. El ensayo sostiene que la poesía lírica escrita en el Perú virreinal nos dejó, a través de sus temas, un testimonio doloroso y verdadero de la sangrienta maquinaria que fue la colonización española. Por tanto, más allá de los nombres de Bartolomé de las Casas o Francisco de Vitoria, fueron muchas otras las voces que clamaron contra el sometimiento y los abusos recibidos por los indígenas.

Abstract: This article explores the beginnings of Spanish poetry in the viceroyalty of Peru and in New Spain via an analysis of the epic and lyric poetry of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Underlining the differences between the poetic production of the two regions, the article contends that the lyric poetry of the viceroyalty of Peru has left an accurate and painful testimony of the brutality of the Spanish colonization. We stress that Bartolomé de las Casas and Francisco de Vitoria were by no means alone in denouncing the subjugation and ill-treatment of the native population.
